Events & Evaluations
Mixed up about which event is which?
ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) Examinations: fall and spring. Comprehensive, rigorous evaluations for repertoire, technical skills and theory. Online registration by student for one-on-one exam with adjudicator.
WSMTA Adjudications: late February/early March. Master class format. Play 2 pieces for an open mini-lesson with a master teacher, plus written comments.
NFMC Junior Festival: 2nd Saturday of March. Play 2 pieces in a small group setting for written comments. Also available: Theory, Concerto and Duet events. Points are earned for gold trophy cups. Recital format, with pauses for adjudication.
National Guild Auditions: late May or early June. Detailed evaluations of memorized repertoire and keyboard patterns. 2-20 pieces may be performed. One-on-one exam with adjudicator.
PAFE (Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside): April. Play 2 memorized pieces for written comments, master class adjudication and honors. Master class format.
Seattle International Piano Festivals: festivals and competitions. Bach Festival in late fall, Viennese & Classical Festival, Romantic Festival and Contemporary & Impressionistic Festival in the spring.
Seattle Young Artists Music Festival: March, during UW’s spring break. Play 1-4 pieces for written comments, master class adjudication and honors. Master class format.
Snelling Competition: 2nd Sunday of March. Entry is limited to 5 students per teacher. Play 2 pieces for cash awards and honors. Must also enter NFMC Jr. Festival. Formal recital format.
Theme and Variations Gala: November Gala, with one dress rehearsal. Join with students of Sondra Hopper to perform in teams, for a fun evening of music and prizes.
LWMTA Young Composers Concert: Students perform their original compositions in a spring recital sponsored by Lake Washington Chapter, WSMTA. Entrants may use traditional notation or their own system of notation. Each performer will receive a souvenir booklet containing all the compositions.
